Adelaide North Special School

Education, South Australia

Process

The Adelaide North Special School (Formerly: Elizabeth Special School) project involved 8 new buildings in a site area of 24,000 m2. It includes specialised learning centre, gymnasium, cooking demonstration facilities, administration offices as well as a large and unique playground area, extensive landscaping and carpark area.  It was essential to have a high standard of compliance and quality considering that this school provides specialised education for almost 200 physically and intellectually disabled students.

This project required a security lock system so students are not able to open them unless a security code is inserted. In case of an emergency the system is programmed to release or lock the doors and gates, as the situation requires. Considering the safety of the students while playing in the unique playground area, a combination of rubber soft floor and play matter were used to minimise students’ falling impacts.

Resolution

Specific consideration was given in selecting the project team responsible for delivering the project on-time, whilst still maintaining a high standard of quality for the project so as to ensure that the innovative design and functionality of the specialist school could be fully realised.

One of the major challenges of this project was the weather conditions. Throughout the construction phase Pascale Construction managed one of the wettest winter and the hottest summers, in South Australia, however still managed delivering the highest quality service within the contractual time frame.
